Fusing journalism and TB – telling the stories as they are

About Journalists Against TB

with 8 comments

The members of this group are committed health journalists; we came together through a programme called The EU India Media Initiative on HIV/AIDS, a pioneering initiative conducted by The Thomson Foundation of the UK.  With Mr Savyasaachi Jain taking the lead on this programme, a large group of journalists in India were taken through specialised training on writing on HIV, given bursaries to write on the issue and thereafter, we all competed for the Reporting HIV/AIDS – The EU India Media Awards.  Six awards were given away per year; four of us in this group won the awards for 2006, and that’s when we all met and affirmed our commitment to writing on health, HIV and TB.  Names of the members in random order:
Biju Mathew – Radio journalist | S Nagarathinam – Print journalist | Rajeet Sinha – TV Journalist | Jasvinder Sehgal – Radio Journalist | Bharathi Ghanashyam – Print Journalist | Bobby Ramakant – Online Journalist |  Savyasaachi Jain – Advisor to the group

  1. Dear Bharathi,

Delighted to find this blog! I work with an organisation called REACH, based in Chennai and we work primarily on TB Care and Support. One of our main projects is a media programme: we offer fellowships as well as media awards to encourage and recognise effective reporting on TB. Nagarathinam was one of our fellowship winners last year.

We’ve just announced the 2011 Media Awards. Can I request you to please post a link on your blog? Here is the link:

Of course, please do spread the word to anyone who may be interested (and submit an entry yourself if you’d like to!)

Thanks a lot and do keep in touch. Could you give me your email address, better to keep in touch that way! Mine is

Many thanks and all the very best

    • Dear Anupama,

Honoured to link your initiative to our blog. Give me a little write up about Reach and I’ll put that up as well. It’s networking that’ll take us close to our goals of eradicating this avoidable problem and happy to help in whatever way I can!

  2. I just want to let all of you know about an organization called RESULTS. We work on global and domestic poverty, and have a project dedicated to TB. It’s called ACTION ( We do a lot of work with the media. For example, last fall we generated over 90 pieces of media encouraging President Obama to make a multi-year pledge to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria. Because of our work with Congress and the media, the US made the first-ever 3-year pledge to the Global Fund for $4 billion. We need journalists working on this. Let me know if there is interest in collaborating.

    • Dear Ken,
Great to hear about your work and more importantly the impact of your work with the media. In India we are grappling with these same issues about how to engage the media enough to make a difference to policy. In fact we would love to know how you did this because 90 pieces is a huge amount of media coverage. Of course we will be interested in collaborating. Do let us know how we can take this forward.

  3. Dear Bharathi,

I am Bijayalaxmi from Voice of Patient forum based in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Today I have read your article (The draconian world of TB). Its’ really wonderful. Our organization and me working with people living with TB (specially DRTB). Your write up is really very touchy. Our adviser asked me to write article in almost same way in Odia adding my experience. Eventually, we will acknowledge you. Hope you will have no objection for that.
